Interlake-Eastern RHA welcomes Dr. Jon Saper to Gimli Community Health Centre
Gimli and area residents will benefit from its newest physician, Dr. Jon Saper. He will be practicing out of Gimli Community Health Centre and taking call in the emergency department.

Dr. Saper and his partner, Ashley, a nurse at Johnson Memorial Hospital, handpicked the Manitoba community of Gimli over other provinces like Alberta and British Columbia. Saper was born in Ontario, but spent time in Manitoba as a child.
“We fell in love with the picturesque, laid back vibe of the community,” says Dr. Saper, who was previously a camp counsellor in Winnipeg Beach. “Another plus side to moving back to Manitoba was being closer to family.”

Dr. Saper, certified as a member of the Canadian College of Family Physicians, is a family medicine residency graduate of the University of Manitoba, Brandon Rural Stream, and earned his medical degree from University College Dublin. He has extensive volunteer experience, including pediatric palliative and respite care with Roger's House, as well as with the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, the Ottawa Children's Treatment Centre, Ottawa Inner City Health, and the Drew Nursing Home, experiences which he says really help to put things into perspective.

“I’m excited to be in Gimli and want to provide a very patient-centred experience,” says Dr.  Saper. “I believe that everyone has a role to play in their own personal health care, and I’m here to hopefully help guide people.”

He also enjoys travelling and has worked in health promotion and provided care to children and families everywhere from Kenya to the slums of Rio de Janeiro.

Throughout his career, sports have also played a large role, having played football and basketball, among others, and he continues to be actively involved with athletics, in particular through coaching football at the high school level.

“Through the cooperative efforts of RHA and the Council of Rural Municipality of Gimli we worked together to attract the Dr. Saper here,” says Mayor Randy Woroniuk, “We’re pleased he has decided to come to practice here and look forward to working with RHA to attract more doctors.”

Patients can phone the Gimli Community Health Centre at 204-642-8561 to make an appointment with Dr. Saper’s reception.  Please be patient while our staff take phone calls in the order they are received, as we anticipate high phone call volumes during Dr. Saper’s first few weeks. Please be sure to have your Manitoba health card out when phoning to make an appointment.
