Canadian Patient Safety Week October 24-28, 2016

Interlake-Eastern RHA promotes “Five questions to ask about your medications” during Canadian Patient Safety Week

Canadian Patient Safety Week (CPSW) is fast approaching on October 24-28, 2016. This year, Interlake-Eastern RHA wants to link you with some great tools, which cover topics such as effective communication with your health care team, medication safety, and patient advocacy. Please visit our website and CPSW page at www.ierha.ca under “About Us” and “Your Safety” and “CPSW” to access patient safety resources. As well, many of these resources will be available to the public at regional facilities during CPSW.

“Medications are the most common treatment used in health care,” says Heather Campbell, quality and patient safety coordinator. “Research shows that patients who ask questions and take an active role in their health care are more satisfied with their care and see greater improvement in their health than patients who do not.”

To assist you, the Institute for Safe Medication Practices (ISMP) in partnership with the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety (MIPS) developed “Five questions to ask about your medications”
when you see your doctor, nurse or pharmacist:

1. Changes? Have any medications been added, stopped or changed, and why?
2. Continue? What medications do I need to keep taking and why?
3. Proper Use? How do I take my medications and for how long?
4. Monitor? How will I know if my medication is working, and what side effects do I watch for?
5. Follow-up? Do I need any tests and when do I book my next visit?

Also, you can visit the MIPS website at www.mips.ca to download and print the “It’s Safe to Ask Medication Card”. Keeping an up to date medication list, including vitamins and over the counter products, is vital to your safety in emergencies and every day.
