Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority AGM attracts 100 people in Selkirk

October 2, 2018 – Approximately 100 community members came out last night to attend the Interlake-Eastern RHA’s 2018 Annual General Meeting at the Selkirk Recreation Complex. The evening featured a very full agenda with a guest panel on health care transformation, progress reports from the Board of Directors and CEO, and presentations for the Chair’s Award for Excellent Client Service and the CEO’s Community Leadership Award.

Emcee Oral Johnston, vice chair of Interlake-Eastern RHA's board of directors welcomed attendees. The agenda began with a presentation and guest panel discussing the most recent developments in health care transformation. Panelists included Margaret Mills, chair, Interlake-Eastern RHA board of directors; Dr. Brock Wright, president and CEO of Shared Health; Ian Shaw, health-care transformation management leader; Ron Van Denakker, CEO of Interlake-Eastern RHA; Marion Ellis, IERHA vice president, acute care and chief nursing officer and was moderated by Dr. Myron Thiessen, IERHA vice president, primary health care and chief medical officer. Key questions were answered on why we need health care transformation, how IERHA staff members are involved at key planning tables and changes to expect within our region.

Progress reports for the 2017-18 fiscal year were presented by Margaret Mills, chair of Interlake-Eastern RHA’s Board of Directors; Steve Day, board finance chair, and CEO Ron Van Denakker. The Q &A session that followed included questions on finances, EMS services, home care and health care transformation.

This year’s winners for the Chair’s Award for Excellent Client Service recognized Interlake-Eastern RHA staff from across the region and reflected the great dedication and client-focus of those working in our community health care facilities. Awarded for regularly going above and beyond were: Mary Jane Kostiuk (registered nurse at Beausejour Hospital), Denis Caya (maintenance at Pinawa Hospital), Lisa Novakowski (nurse practitioner at Lac du Bonnet District Health Centre) and Paula Seguin (ward clerk/primary care referral desk reception at Pine Falls Health Complex). Seguin was able to attend the meeting and receive her award in person.

The 2018 CEO’s Award for Community Leadership was presented to Gwen Traverse, health care director for the Pinaymootang Community Health Centre which was re-opened this past July. Gwen was recognized for her advocacy efforts and community partnership building in expanding the health care services within the Pinaymootang First Nation community, which is situated near the town of Ashern. Creating a “hub” of health care programming and services in the First Nation provided a much needed opportunity for primary care close to the homes of many surrounding communities now returning home following the 2011 Lake Manitoba flood.
