Interlake-Eastern RHA welcomes new nurse practitioner to the community of Teulon

Updated November 5, 2018

Interlake-Eastern RHA is pleased to welcome nurse practitioner (NP) Adrian Sawatzky to practice at Teulon Medical Clinic.

"Primary care helps ensure better long-term health for Manitobans living in our rural communities and the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority has been working hard to address this," said Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Cameron Friesen. "By continuing to recruit physicians and nurse practitioners to communities like Teulon, families throughout the IERHA region are able to receive consistent, reliable primary care closer to home."

Sawatzky studied at the University of Manitoba and worked as an emergency, intensive care and cardiac care nurse before continuing his education to become an NP.

“I saw what NPs could do – things like stitches, reading x-rays, making diagnoses and prescribing drugs – and I knew I wanted to do that. Being an NP means I can continue to learn about medicine every day and improve people’s lives. It’s a very challenging but rewarding job,” says Sawatzky.

Sawatzky is happy to be working at Teulon Medical Clinic with Dr. Loudon and nurse practitioner Aravind Pampackal, with whom he trained previously. It was his placement in Teulon that inspired him to later seek out work in the community.

“I’m a city slicker who was placed for a clinical rotation in Teulon. I liked it so much I requested to come back for a second rotation. I love the team in the Teulon Medical Clinic. I have developed good relationships in this community as a student and I am excited to come back. Being the only clinic in Teulon and surrounding area, it really feels like we take care of our own,” says Sawatzky.

Coming from an urgent and acute care background, Sawatzky also enjoys being people’s first point of contact for health care by working in primary health care and providing preventative care.

“Coming from working in emergency rooms and intensive care, I have seen the worst of what chronic disease can lead to. Working in primary care gives me the opportunity to keep people out of the hospital and, instead, enjoy a healthy, high quality of life for as long as possible,” says Sawatzky.

Interlake-Eastern RHA has been working to ensure that communities have reliable access to primary health care providers. Paul Barnard, Interlake-Eastern RHA’s director of primary health care and physician services, says that these recruitment efforts are paying off.

“We’re focusing on recruiting new care providers, like Adrian, who really want to work in our rural communities. Getting people the care they need, closer to home, is what solid primary health care is all about and we’re continuing our recruitment efforts to make that a reality across our region,” says Barnard.
