Conquer Silence - Making Patient Safety a Top Priority

Patient Safety Week - October 28 to November 1

It’s a statistic that is equally surprising and shocking: Patient safety incidents are the third leading cause of death in Canada, behind cancer and heart disease. Each year, over 28,000 of Canadians die from preventable harm when receiving care, every single year. To stem this tide, all health-care consumers are encouraged to strive for better teamwork and communication with patients, families, and care providers in all settings.

The Canadian Patient Safety Institute has launched to bring patient safety issues to the forefront. It’s time to end the Silent Epidemic. The campaign is part of a series of events for Canadian Patient Safety week October 28 to November 1.

Closer to home, the Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety is co-hosting Falling Through the Cracks: Greg’s Story on November 1. It’s a short documentary on Greg Price’s health-care journey that ended in his unexpected and tragic death. In spite of the sadness of Greg’s Story, the message of the film is intended to inspire positive change and improvement in the health-care system. Register for the live stream viewing of the documentary. (Event has now passed)

The Manitoba Institute for Patient Safety has also developed the My Patient Advocate Agreement to assist the public to advocate for themselves, and their loved ones, along their health-care journey. Interlake-Eastern RHA has embraced the use of this document. Patients and families who are knowledgeable and who participate in their health-care can decrease their risk of suffering preventable harm within the health-care system. Download and print the agreement for your use.

Interlake–Eastern RHA is offering an abundance of helpful patient safety resources for everyone to use.
