Selkirk area selected for Interlake-Eastern RHA’s first My Health Team

Improving access to needed health care services

Residents in Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority will soon be able to access primary health care in a more consistent and coordinated way with the addition of the new Selkirk and area My Health Team.

“Good primary health care is at the foundation of a high-quality, sustainable health care system and it’s a priority for Manitobans,” said Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Cameron Friesen. “Expanding Manitoba’s My Health Teams offers Manitobans more ability to have their everyday health care needs dealt with closer to home, with better access to primary and specialized care.”

My Health Teams reflect a formal relationship among local physicians, community organizations and the regional health authority to work together to plan, develop and provide primary care services for residents in their respective areas. Primary care, typically a doctor or nurse practitioner, is the first place people will go for day-to-day health concerns. My Health Teams are an approach to care that bring different kinds of health care providers together, sharing information and resources, and building on existing services to offer more all-inclusive, coordinated, patient centric primary health care. If care providers are not working out of one site together, they are linked online so patient information can be easily shared and accessible.

The My Health Team for Selkirk and area has been created by a steering committee comprised of Dr. Ian Alexander and Dr. Jonathan Brown of Selkirk Medical Associates, Dr. Margaret Speer at the Eveline Street Clinic and representatives from the Canadian Mental Health Association, Addictions Foundation of Manitoba, the Interlake-Eastern RHA and Manitoba Health, Seniors and Active Living.

Dr. Alexander has identified that the My Health Team will reflect the unique care needs of people in the region.

“The past year has seen the steering committee meet on a regular basis to contribute our personal experiences and review data about health care needs in Selkirk and area. We are confident we’re off to a very good start by identifying the most appropriate care providers to enhance the My Health Team’s service delivery and to meet the pressing needs of people living in this area,” Alexander said.

My Health Teams help to reinforce that patients are an important partner in their health-care journey, said Ron Van Denakker, CEO of Interlake-Eastern RHA.

“A My Health Team works with patients to help manage and track their care in a coordinated way. Care providers on the team connect people with the right health service provider or community resource at the right time because all care providers are connected through the electronic medical record. Patients can spend less time arranging appointments or repeating their medical history and more time working with care providers to focus on improving their health,” Van Denakker said.

When patients have access to primary health care, they experience reduced need for hospital and emergency department visits, care is safer and patients are more satisfied with their care.

In addition to physician care, the My Health Team servicing Selkirk and area will provide mental health support, chronic disease management and focus on connecting people with resources relevant to their specific needs that will contribute to maintaining good health.

The Selkirk and area My Health Team is the thirteenth My Health Team operating in Manitoba. It is anticipated that the new services will begin in early 2020.
