05/11/11 Selkirk Doctor Receives National Recognition of Peers
On May 4, retired Selkirk and District Health Centre physician Dr. Ike Hussain was awarded an honorary membership award by the Canadian Medical Association (CMA).

The CMA honors select candidates nominated by medical associations for eminence in medicine, science or the humanities or rendered service to the CMA.

Dr. Hussain worked in Selkirk from June 1970 and retired in 2010. In the nomination letter to Doctors Manitoba penned by Dr. Cary Chapnick, Interlake Regional Health Authority’s vice-president of medical services, Dr. Chapnick stated: “I know that the physicians in Selkirk along with the longstanding operating room team of nurses and anesthetists all share my sentiment that Dr. Hussain is a very easy person to work with and is always an example of a highly professional and respectful physician to which we have attempted to model ourselves.”

Dr. Hussain’s accomplishments at the Selkirk and District Health Centre include his initiation and negotiation of an agreement with the Province of Manitoba for hiring emergency room physicians to provide 24 hour coverage at the Selkirk hospital. Prior to this, physicians practicing in the community were responsible for emergency room coverage. In 1980, when Dr. Hussain wanted to introduce the new concept of endoscopic examinations, he worked with the Selkirk Rotary club that purchased the first set of endoscopes. In addition, with his expertise and influence, the Selkirk and District Health Centre was the first hospital in Manitoba outside of Winnipeg with the capacity to perform laparoscopic surgery.

He initiated the negotiations between the Manitoba Medical Association and the provincial government to establish payment for surgeons and obstetricians to be on call for hospitals in Manitoba. Of great significance to his patients, throughout his 40 year career, he routinely made himself available seven days a week, 24 hours a day for emergencies and cesarean sections.

Recipients of the CMA’s honorary membership award enjoy free membership and its rights and privileges for life.
Dr. Hussain’s award was presented at the Doctors Manitoba annual general meeting at the Fort Garry Hotel in Winnipeg.
