06/24/2011 Interlake RHA Facilities Meet National Standards of Excellence
Stonewall, Man., June 24, 2011—Every three years, staff and directors at Interlake Regional Health Authority (RHA) voluntarily submit to a review of health care facilities, processes and procedures. This review, by an external organization called Accreditation Canada, evaluates the Interlake RHA against 1,805 nationally established standards of excellence for health care delivery quality and safety. This year, the Interlake RHA achieved Accreditation status reflecting its compliance with addressing high priority criteria, undertaking required organizational practices and collecting information that helps evaluate the Interlake RHA’s performance.

Interlake RHA’s vice-president of planning, Doreen Fey, oversees the RHA’s continuous improvement process. For the past 10 years, Fey has been a surveyor with Accreditation Canada, meaning she travels to health care facilities across Canada to survey their adherence to standards. She has commended Interlake RHA staff and directors on the accomplishment of Accreditation status.

“From my experience, it has been rare for facilities to achieve Accreditation status,” Fey said. “We are quite proud that we’re operating in compliance with nationally recognized standards.”

Accreditation is one of the most effective ways for health service providers to regularly and consistently examine and improve the quality of their services. Different levels of accreditation can be secured. “Accreditation” is the best level of performance and requires no further follow up. According to Accreditation Canada statistics from 2010, approximately 20 per cent of the organizations they reviewed earned Accreditation status. “Accreditation with Condition” requires further reporting to be provided or a site revisit by an Accreditation Canada representative to ensure conditions have been addressed.

Accreditation certificates are being framed for posting in Interlake RHA facilities and banners announcing the achievement of accreditation status are being hung on the exterior of all facilities. Some are up already, other facilities are waiting for a break in the rainy weather to get them placed. The Interlake RHA has successfully secured accreditation since it first started working with Accreditation Canada in 1998. The next accreditation review of Interlake RHA facilities begins in 2013.

Accreditation Canada (http://www.accreditation.ca) is a not-for-profit, independent organization that provides health organizations with an external peer review to assess the quality of their services based on standards of excellence. Accreditation Canada is accredited by the International Society for Quality in Health Care and has been fostering quality in health services across Canada and internationally since 1958. The Interlake RHA voluntarily requests Accreditation Canada to enter its facilities for accreditation assessment.
