11/18/11 Camp Stepping Stones Among Dufresne Funding Recipients
Donation through $1 Million Charity Challenge just in time for seasonal gift giving campaign

Stonewall, Man., November 18, 2011—Camp Stepping Stones, established in 2004 by the Interlake Regional Health Authority’s palliative care staff members, is among 51 charities selected from hundreds of applications to receive funding through Dufresne’s $1 Million Charity Challenge. The camp received a $5,000 one time grant from Dufresne with a challenge to raise matching funds by February 2012.

Camp Stepping Stones is for children aged seven to 17 who have experienced the recent death of someone significant in their lives. It offers programs and activities to help campers learn they are not alone in their grief. It also provides valuable coping skills for dealing with loss. Over 30 trained volunteers, a majority are Interlake RHA staff, help with the camp that accepts 50 participants annually. Campers come from all over Manitoba.

The timing for the grant couldn’t have been better, according to Interlake RHA palliative care coordinator, Sarah Pinsent, who oversees camp planning. Pinsent wrote the successful funding application.

“Those of us who’ve volunteered at Camp Stepping Stones witness the positive changes we’re making in children’s lives,” Pinsent said. “But every year, we face financial challenges to offer this camp free of charge for the children who attend. This donation is an excellent kick-off to our holiday gift giving campaign.”

The campaign encourages holiday shoppers to consider making a donation to Camp Stepping Stones in the name of a loved one. A donation of $200 will cover the costs for one child to attend camp. A $100 donation will cover the costs of just over a day at camp. Camp Stepping Stone T-shirts are also available for sale at Interlake RHA facility gift shops.

“This is a donation that will remain in the Interlake and help children and families get through a tough time,” Pinsent said. “We end up declining applications every year because we’re full. There is a real need for this camp and for what we can achieve at this camp. We are grateful to have been selected as one of Dufresne’s charities of choice. The grant spotlights our work as volunteers and, with matching funds from the community, helps us continue offering camp to kids who need it.”

Donations can be mailed to Camp Stepping Stones, Interlake RHA, Box 5000, 100 Easton Drive, Selkirk, MB, R1A 2M2. Online donations can be made at www.canadahelps.org. Search for “Camp Stepping Stones”.
