11/23/11 Interlake Youth Get Front Row Perspective on Healthy Living
Evergreen School Division - Youth Health Forum
 
Stonewall, Man., November 23, 2011  — Approximately 100 grades seven to 11 students from the Evergreen School Division will attend a one-day event designed to help them understand how to make healthy choices the easy choices. They will also hear findings from the Interlake RHA’s most recent (2009) youth health survey.
 
When:   Thursday, December 1, 2011
Where: Gimli Rec Centre
Time:    9:15 a.m. to 3:15 a.m.
 
Drew Kozub, from Breakfast TV Daily will emcee. Drew is a former student of the Evergreen School Division
 
The forum is offered through a partnership of Sport Manitoba – Interlake Region, the Evergreen School Division’s Healthy Schools Committee, and the Interlake RHA’s Public Health Team and Community Wellness Team.
 
The Interlake RHA’s 2009 Youth Survey identified:
·   54% of all Interlake students participate in the recommended amount of physical activity daily (59% of boys and
49% of girls)
·   16% of boys and 16% of girls are currently smoking
·   26% of students indicated that they had 5 or more drinks of alcohol within a couple of hours in the last 30 days
·   19% of students report using any illegal drugs in the last 30 days
·   15% of students report that they had felt so hopeless in the past 12 months that they felt nothing was worthwhile
·   38% of students felt so sad or hopeless that they stopped doing some of their usual activities
 
Photo opportunities throughout the day – check with staff on-site to confirm which students have a signed a photo consent form.

Students divided into 3 groups to rotate through all 3 afternoon presentations:
- Stress Management – Hockey foyer
- Community Development – Upstairs
- Nutrition – Curling foyer
