11/23/11 Electronic Health-Record System Up and Running in Stonewall

Stonewall, November 23, 2011—Stonewall & District Health Centre is the most recent Interlake RHA facility to begin using a new electronic health-record system, known as eChart Manitoba.

Shannon Montgomery, Interlake RHA’s District Director for the southwest region that includes Stonewall has overseen the introduction of eChart into the health centre.

“EChart pulls together patient information from a number of sources,” Montgomery said. “Currently, it collects information on medication dispensed, immunization records, patient demographics and laboratory results and houses it in one place for quick and easy access by healthcare professionals.”

Dr. Dirk Venter is among physicians at the Stonewall health centre using eChart. He said the biggest advantage of eChart is the time it will save doctors and patients by amalgamating a patient’s medical history.

“We have access to a complete medical history. We’ll know what has worked and what hasn’t worked for a patient and we can take this into consideration when determining treatment,” Venter said.

EChart Manitoba provides authorized health-care providers with a consolidated view of key patient health information.  This information includes: prescriptions filled at retail pharmacies through the Drug Programs Information Network (DPIN); immunization histories recorded in the Manitoba Immunization Monitoring System (MIMS); demographic information, including personal health identification number (PHIN), birth date and address, from the Manitoba Provincial Client Registry (CR) system; and laboratory results from participating laboratories

Diamond Kassum, Chief Medical Information Officer with Manitoba eHealth, identifies the ease of information sharing with eChart as an additional benefit to patients and healthcare systems.

“Reliable patient information can be shared seamlessly across the continuum of care provided to a patient,” Dr. Kassum said. “Healthcare facilities and providers recognize efficiencies because less time is spent searching for information from other health care sites.”

Ultimately, Montgomery said it’s in patients’ best interests to have eChart working on their behalf.

“Having a patient’s health care history available to health care providers in the right place at the right time is critical, especially in the case of an emergency,” Montgomery said.

Over time, eChart Manitoba will be available to more health care providers at more facilities. For more information on eChart Manitoba, visit here.
