01/19/2012 Dufresne Presents Interlake’s Camp Stepping Stones with $5,000

Representatives from The Dufresne Group, one of Canada’s largest furniture and appliance retailers, visited Johnson Memorial Hospital in Gimli today to present volunteers at Camp Stepping Stones with a cheque for $5,000.

Camp Stepping Stones, held at Camp Arnes north of Gimli, is attended by children and adolescents aged seven to 17 who have experienced the recent death of someone significant in their lives. It was established in 1984 by Interlake Regional Health Authority’s (RHA’s) palliative care staff members who recognized the need for a camp of this nature. It was the first camp of its kind in Manitoba.

As one of 51 charities selected from hundreds of applications to receive funding through Dufresne’s $1 Million Charity Challenge, the camp received the one time grant from Dufresne with a challenge to raise matching funds.

“We’re excited to support Camp Stepping Stones as part of Dufresne’s $1 Million Charity Challenge,” said Mark Dufresne, CEO of The Dufresne Group. “This is our way of thanking the communities that have supported us for the past 25 years. We believe in giving back and we know that through this donation we are helping children and adolescents in both the Interlake and across Manitoba.”

Camp Stepping Stones offers programs and activities to help campers learn they are not alone in their grief. It also provides valuable coping skills for dealing with loss. Over 30 trained volunteers, a majority are Interlake RHA staff, help with the camp that accepts 50 participants annually. Campers come from all over Manitoba.

“This camp is near and dear to our hearts. It was started by Interlake RHA staff who volunteered their time to make it happen and staff still continue to volunteer to participate,” said Audra Nesbitt-Hume, manager of palliative care. “Dufresne’s recognition of the camp’s value is something that gives us great pride. The financial support they have provided gives us peace of mind that we’ll be able to offer camp this year with continued community support.”
Donations can be mailed to Camp Stepping Stones, Interlake RHA, Box 5000, 100 Easton Drive, Selkirk, MB, R1A 2M2 or dropped off at Gimli Hospital. Online donations can be made at www.canadahelps.org. Search for “Camp Stepping Stones”.
