10/25/12 Interlake-Eastern RHA Wellness Facilitator Named Fitness Leader of the Year

October 25, 2012 – At its annual general meeting on October 21, the Manitoba Fitness Council awarded Jan Keryluk with the 2012 Fitness Leader of the Year award. Keryluk has been working as a wellness facilitator with the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority's (IERHA) community wellness team since 2009.

Hailed as Manitoba's highest honour by the local fitness industry, the award is presented annually to a fitness leader who exhibits outstanding instruction techniques; shows leadership in programming; is strongly commitment to physical activity and community; and provides an atmosphere that encourages their peers and participants.

Keryluk said she is overwhelmed by the recognition from her peers.

“It's such an honour for something I really love to do,” Keryluk said. She admits that she would never have believed this possible when she was younger.

“I didn't even like phys ed in high school! It took a while to find the type of physical activity I was passionate about. My life has changed in a positive way since I have become certified as a fitness leader. I‘ve had a lot of really great adventures and met a lot of really great people as a result of being involved in physical activity,” Keryluk said.

As part of the IERHA's community wellness team, Keryluk provides expertise to help people prevent or reduce incidence of chronic disease. Physical activity is one of the four pillars of health along with being smoke free, eating healthy, being physically active and being emotionally well. Among her programs, Keryluk assists with the girls club in Gimli and Winnipeg Beach, assists with Step'n Out with Mom in Selkirk and has delivered active living facilitator training across the Interlake. In addition, she teaches fitness classes and organizes fundraisers, conferences and special events with the intent of propelling people to better health through their participation in physical activity. She's known in the Interlake as “Zumba Jan” and her colleagues in the Interlake-Eastern RHA are particularly proud of her.

“Our wellness facilitators are purposely selected to join our community wellness team because they embrace health living and they find it personally rewarding to help others acquire healthy habits,” said Doreen Fey, IERHA's vice-president of primary care. “We are so pleased to see Jan receive this provincial recognition for the work she does within the IERHA and beyond. There are now thousands of people within our region living healthier lives thanks to Jan.”
