3/1/13 IERHA Poster Contest Contributes to Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections
March 1, 2013—The Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority has launched a poster contest to students in grades 9 to 12 asking them to design the next posters to be used in public health campaigns to prevent transmission of sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

An initiative of the region’s communicable disease program under the public health program, the contest is capitalizing on the opportunity to let kids talk to kids.

“With STI rates highest among 15-24 years olds, we are encouraging teens to raise awareness and knowledge about STIs,” said Christine Brooks, communicable disease services manager (East) with the Interlake-Eastern RHA. “We are hoping for some creative peer to peer messaging that will assist us in decreasing the incidence of STIs within the region.”

Prizes are being awarded for first, second and third place. Submissions can be sent electronically or dropped off at any public health office or teen clinic in the region. All submissions must be accompanied by a parental/guardian consent form. Winners’ schools will be printed on posters but the names of the artists will remain anonymous.

“We see youth at our Teen Clinics on a regular basis with questions about STI transmission. Our public health education campaigns help us ensure that people get the right information they need to know to protect their health,” said Kathryn Baldwin, communicable disease coordinator (West) with the Interlake-Eastern RHA.
