05/20/2013 STI Prevention Poster Contest Winners Announced

May 14, 2013—Interlake-Eastern RHA announced today the winning submissions in the Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) Prevention Poster Contest. The contest was open to Interlake-Eastern RHA students in grades 9 to 12.

“We were really pleased with the calibre of artwork and accuracy of messages that were conveyed,” Kathryn Baldwin, STI prevention coordinator for the Interlake-Eastern RHA said.

A judging panel that included teenagers and public health nurses selected winning posters based on creativity and messaging. The posters will be printed and placed in participating schools and public areas over upcoming months.

First place went to a student at Ashern Central School, second prize went to a student at Teulon Collegiate and third prize was awarded to a student from Lord Selkirk Comp. Entries were received from all over the region and winners received cash prizes.

Manitoba Health reports some the highest rates and increase in STIs are in people aged 15 to 24.

“What better way for our messages to stand out than to have them crafted by fellow teens?,” Baldwin said. “We want senior high school students talking about STIs and discussing healthy attitudes towards sexual activity. Openly communicating with teens about sexual activity is the best way to help them make informed decisions that will keep them healthy, mentally and physically, as they formulate their own individual sexual identities.”
