Preparing for Surgery

Selkirk & District General Hospital wants to ensure your surgery is more than successful.  Please take a moment view the following helpful information that will help us ensure your surgery is scheduled and that you're prepared.

1. Ensure your family physician and your surgeon have your most up to date contact information.

2. Follow all surgery preparation instructions to the best of your ability.

3. When you receive a message regarding your surgery date, please respond as quickly as possible to ensure you do not lose your spot, or to reschedule if necessary well in advance.

Our practice is:

Two attempts will be made to contact our patients to schedule their surgery. If we do not receive confirmation within one week of the second attempt, the surgery will be moved to the bottom of the list.

Why do we do this?

Recent studies at Selkirk & District General Hospital have shown that we have a high cancellation rate for surgeries.

Although there are many reasons for surgery cancellations, statistical data has shown us that patients are often to ones that cancel a surgery. You may not realize it but if you cancel your surgery, we can incur some significant costs. Rescheduling appointments may be very difficult and if we can't fill your scheduled spot, wait lists grow longer and valuable operating time that involves highly skilled staff members is lost.
