Power of Prevention Conference May 28 will inspire and educate on achieving overall health

Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority’s (RHA) Wellness Team is preparing for the fifth annual Healthy Living – Power of Prevention Conference, May 28 at the Lakeview Resort and Conference Centre in Gimli. The one day event, highlighting the importance that prevention initiatives and health promotion activities play in reducing the risk of chronic disease, is open to the public and includes an evening gala where winners of the Health Promotion Recognition Awards will be announced. In addition to key note speakers Tim Hague Sr., winner of Amazing Race Canada and Paul LaPolice, former head coach of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers and current TSN broadcaster, the day will include breakout sessions that are geared towards preventing chronic disease before it happens and helping those living with chronic disease make healthier choices to slow or prevent the progression of disease.

Our modern world brings tremendous challenges to living healthy and rewarding lives. Chronic disease is the leading cause of death and disability in Canada. It cuts people’s lives short and it introduces disabilities that reduce people’s quality of life. The goal of the conference is to provide the best possible resources to everyone.

According to Doreen Fey, vice president primary care and chief administrative officer at the Interlake-Eastern RHA, the conference will provide practical information about achieving whole body wellness by making small changes.

This will be an outstanding event for everyone. Whether your interest in health is personal or professional there will be something for you to learn, something for you to take away and incorporate into your own life. Participants will have the option of choosing from eight breakout sessions and can make the most of their time by attending sessions with a focus on family health, exercise, nutrition, safety and our changing environment,” Fey said.

Last year’s event was attended by 125 people from 28 communities across the region. Participants ranged from community residents to those involved in health, recreation, education and community development.

The conference, emceed by Drew Kozub remote host of CITY TV’s Breakfast Television, will include sessions by Tim Hague Sr. and Paul LaPolice. Both will share real life experiences that have shaped, inspired and motivated them in the face of challenge. Their stories will drive participants on their own journey to making a difference in their field and to themselves and others.

Everyone is welcome to attend the Healthy Living – Power of Prevention conference. Early bird tickets can be purchased until May 9 for $75. Following May 9, tickets will be available for $100. Dinner at the evening gala is included in the ticket price. To register please click here.
