Interlake-Eastern RHA Seeks Board Advisors through Local Health Involvement Groups

Local Health Involvement Groups (LHIGs) are being created across Manitoba and Interlake-Eastern RHA is seeking applicants who want to be a part of health care decision making. LHIG members will explore ideas and provide advice to Interlake-Eastern RHA's Board of Directors on issues that impact the delivery of local health services. The deadline for LHIG applications is October 31.

Diane Kelly, Chair of Interlake-Eastern RHA’s board of directors, summarized the outcome of community consultations that were held in Ashern, Beausejour, Gimli, Lac du Bonnet and Selkirk to determine how the LHIGs should be structured.

Residents in the region told us that successful Local Health Involvement Groups would need to provide two way communication between the board and the groups. They wanted the board to be accountable in showing how Local Health Involvement Group feedback was being used. They also wanted to ensure that Local Health Involvement Group processes were widely accessible and inclusive of those who had an interest in contributing but had varying amounts of time to dedicate. We’re addressing all of these requirements in the regional LHIG structure we’ve outlined,” Kelly said.

Successful applicants will be working with other Local Health Involvement Group members to discuss and identify issues that affect the delivery of local health services. Each group will summarize their comments for presentation to the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority board of directors.

It’s expected there will be at least four meetings of each Local Health Involvement Group per year with meetings being a half to full day in duration. LHIG members will also receive an orientation to the RHA. Each group can determine if they’d like to take advantage of conference calling and webinars to reduce travel requirements in winter months. LHIG applications are available to residents in the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority who have an interest in improving health care in the region and who are able to commit the time required to participate in the Local Health Involvement Group.

All applications will be reviewed by a committee of the RHA’s board of directors. People who are selected will participate in one of four LHIGs across the region.
