Sharing Knowledge to Create a Healthier Tomorrow

Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority’s (RHA) Community Wellness and Chronic Disease Prevention team, seeks session presenters for the sixth annual Power of Prevention conference taking place on May 27 and 28, 2015 in Gimli, Manitoba. The conference provides a two-day get away where participants receive information, tools and resources for change to strengthen and build healthier communities.

Leana Smith, regional manager community wellness and chronic disease prevention with Interlake-Eastern RHA stated this year’s theme is “Back to Basics”.

“This year we are looking at getting “Back to Basics”. Taking time to refocus attention on fundamental elements of well being in the area of mental health, physical activity and nutrition, will encourage participants to evaluate how and what they can do to make positive change in their community and the necessary steps toward creating healthier habits,” Smith said.

The conference attracts individuals in recreation, health care, education staff, volunteers, representatives from not-for-profit community organizations and municipalities, and individuals attending for personal growth. Attendance at last year’s conference included 125 people from over 25 communities across the region.

“The primary goal for participants is gaining knowledge that can be applied in their professional and volunteer roles, as well as in their personal lives. We look for presenters to include practical tips and tools for making positive changes that will help us all get back to basics and make healthier choices. Sessions are typically 60 minutes in length and participants choose from a variety of speakers. Providing a bit of choice gives attendees the opportunity to make the conference a more personal experience and ideally speaks more directly to their interests,” Smith said.

The conference committee will be meeting in early December to review presenter submissions. If you have a story, resources or research presentation featuring ‘Back to Basics’ initiatives that will cement stronger foundations, build relationships and elevate well being within a community we want to hear from you.
