Gimli sees 119 family medicine physician residents visit for yearly retreat

Interlake-Eastern RHA hosted the 2019 Family Medicine Resident Retreat in Gimli September 13 to 15 to showcase the many practice and lifestyle opportunities available to physicians in the region. This year, organizers expected 119 first and second year family medicine physician residents who had the opportunity to learn from the educational presentations, explore this part of Manitoba with their families and rekindle relationships with their classmates.

“The weekend would not be a success without the help of LGD of Pinawa, RM of Alexander, RM of Coldwell, RM of West Interlake, RM of Whitemouth, Town of Arborg, Town of Lac du Bonnet, Town of Powerview-Pine Falls, Town of Teulon and the Town of Winnipeg Beach who understand the value of investing in this retreat to help with physician recruitment in our communities. Thank you for your sponsorship,” says physician recruitment officer Lorri Beer. “A special thank you to the individuals who represented their communities , who handed out the welcome baskets, and who extended a warm welcome to these young doctors to start their weekend off right.”

In conjunction with the University of Manitoba and class chief residents, rural health authorities, the Office of Rural and Northern Health and Interlake-Eastern RHA, a variety of tourist, social and educational events were planned for the weekend.
Throughout the weekend the residents were exposed to “lake life” with golfing, beach volleyball, visiting the local museum and more. Clinically, the residents are exposed to educational sessions on special interests in family practice, physician wellness, suturing, lessons learned experience in the first five years of practice, rural emergency medicine and Indigenous health among many others. A special thank you to Interlake-Eastern RHA’s doctors who took the time to speak to the residents and for attending the job fair.

The last Resident Retreat hosted in Selkirk was in September of 2016 and as a result of the overwhelmingly warm welcome these young physicians received from our communities, physicians and the RHA we have seen 14 former University of Manitoba Family Medicine Residents join the region since that time - more than the region has ever been able to attract in the past. These doctors could have started their practices anywhere in Canada (or abroad) but they chose Interlake-Eastern RHA..
