12/12/12 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) Program to Help Parents and Caregivers
Eight-week program delivered across the region
December 12, 2012 —In January, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) coordinators in the Interlake-Eastern Regional Health Authority are hosting Building Circles of Support, an eight-week series of informational sessions being offered via telehealth in Eriksdale, Selkirk, Beausejour and Berens River.
Each week a different topic on FASD is being discussed. Guest speakers will present and handout material will be provided.
Commencing January 8, sessions are every Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. up to and including February 26, 2013. Topics include: What does it mean that my child has FASD? How will FASD affect their behavior, school performance and social interactions? How can I help others understand my child’s disability? How can I help my child understand his/her disability? How can I help my child develop his/her strengths?
These sessions are being offered free of charge. Refreshments are provided and those attending eight sessions will receive a certificate.
Sherise Picklyk Dear, FASD coordinator, will be hosting sessions in Selkirk (Selkirk Hospital), Diane Gardarsdottir will be hosting the sessions in Eriksdale (Eriksdale Wellness Centre). Devon Ungurain, FASD coordinator, will host the sessions out of Beausejour Primary Health Care Centre and Laverne Everette will host at Berens River nursing station. These information sessions are not intended for youth or children – no childcare support is provided onsite.
To date, approximately 40 people have participated in Building Circles of Support that was first offered in the RHA in 2011.
