Better income can help people provide better food and nutrition for their families, as well as warm clothing and safe housing, pay for needed medications to manage health conditions, and even pay for recreation programs to keep us engaged and active. When one person or family benefits, our whole community benefits!
One way to improve income is to access financial benefits that you may be eligible for. In order to access benefits, however, one must first file an income tax return.

Accessing Your Benefits
Need help finding what benefits you may be eligible for? There are services that can help.
- Prosper Canada Benefits Wayfinder – A tool that simplifies the search for government benefits. Provides benefit recommendations tailored to your situation based on the information you provide in the online questionnaire.
- Get Your Benefits booklet – A quick access booklet listing federal, provincial, and regional benefits, and programs. Remember: Some benefits and credits are automatically calculated when you file your taxes each year. Other benefits require an additional application process. Accessing benefits and programs can contribute to improved health and wellbeing.

Get a copy of the Get Your Benefits booklet. A plain language resource listing select federal, provincial or regional benefits and programs for Manitobans who may be eligible.
- Service Canada – Canada.ca – Service Canada provides Canadians with a single point of access to a wide range of government services and benefits. You can also visit Manitoba – Find a Service Canada Office – Canada.ca for local outreach.
- Benefits – Canada.ca – for information on benefits including Employment Insurance, dental coverage, child benefit, pensions and benefits for housing, student aid, family, disabilities and after a death.
- Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) – Your main source for tax information and filing links.
- Manitoba Employment and Income Assistance (EIA)- provides financial help to Manitobans who have no other way to support themselves or their families. This includes benefits from the Rent Assist Program that helps with housing costs.
- EIA for Persons with Disabilities – Employment and Income Assistance Program (EIA) for persons with disabilities
- Manitoba Supports for Persons with Disabilities – supports for Manitobans living with severe and prolonged disabilities.
- Service Manitoba– A one-stop shop for government services, helping Manitobans access government programs and services in French and in English.
Identification and certificates, such as birth, marriage and death
ID is needed to file income tax and access benefits.

- Social Insurance Number
- Manitoba identification card – photo ID card, for people without a driver’s license.
- Southern Chiefs Organization (SCO) Status Card and ID Program – can assist with status card renewal, replacement, or first-time process at no cost.
- Citizenship | Manitoba Métis Federation – Red River Métis Citizenship and Harvester identification card applications.
