Training and Education Opportunities

Interlake-Eastern RHA endorses the following palliative care education opportunities.

Pallium Canada Learning Essential Approaches to Palliative and End-of-Life Care (LEAP)

LEAP Core is an interactive two-day course for physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, other health professionals and health managers. This  course delivers 14 modules covering topics such as Last Days and Hours, Pain Management, Palliative Sedation, Essential Conversations and Decision Making in Palliative Care (see poster for complete listing).


Palliative Care Education for HCAs, HSWs, and Support Services

This one day course from Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association (CHPCA) is intended for Home Care Attendants, Community and Facility Health Care Aids and Support Service Staff. Comprised of 6 modules, topics include: Changing Illness Trajectories and the Integrated Palliative Approach to Care, Communication and Psychosocial Support, Pain, Dying, Final Hours of Care, The Role of Support Workers and Self Care.


Palliative Care Companion Volunteer Training

This course is designed to increase awareness and develop skills for interacting with individuals and their family caregivers whose disease does not respond to curative treatment. Course length is approximately 16 to 18 hours and runs over 8 modules which cover topics such as Effective Communication Skills, Family and Family Dynamics, Grief and Bereavement and Volunteer Self Care. The training is offered at no cost and is open for anyone to attend, there is no requirement that participants commit to volunteering however it is pre-requisite for those interested in becoming a Palliative Care Companion Volunteer with our program. Community Education

The Palliative Care Program offers Advance Care Planning Presentations at no cost to community groups throughout the Interlake-Eastern Region! This interactive presentation is approximately 1 hour in length and includes valuable resources such as an Advance Care Planning Workbook and wallet card.
