Ashern’s Lakeshore General Hospital Expansion

About the project
Now that construction and renovations in Lakeshore General Hospital are complete, there is greater capacity to have additional healthcare staff treat patients closer to their home – closer to family, friends and their support systems.
Phase one of construction, completed in May 2025, was the expansion of the inpatient unit which added 12 new inpatient beds to the hospital (bringing the total from 14 to 26). For the second phase of construction completed in March 2026, the emergency department was fully renovated and expanded to add eight treatment spots (bringing the total to 13).

Project Details
The project was built in phases. The first phase completed was to build an addition to provide a new medicine inpatient unit. Once that work concluded, renovation began to transform the former inpatient area into emergency department with additional emergency department treatment spaces.
Emergency Department Renovations:
- Expansion of emergency department to provide eight more treatment spaces (5,400 sq. ft.)
- Negative pressure isolation room that can also accommodate bariatric patients
- Dedicated interview/consult room
- Hallway stretcher bays replaced with treatment rooms

New Inpatient Beds and Enhanced Services:
- Single storey building addition to provide 26 inpatient beds total, which includes 12 new inpatient beds (18,000 sq. ft.)
- All patient rooms are single bed rooms. This increases patient privacy and improves infection prevention and control. Windows in each room optimize views for every patient.
- Includes enhanced palliative care room with attached family room
- Reverse pressure isolation room that can accommodate bariatric patients
- New spiritual care space
- New occupational therapy and physiotherapy space
- Central care stations provide visible points of contact for staff, patients and families
- New tub/bathing room
